Marc rushed toward Vernon, but Riley grabbed his arm, held him back. “Don’t get too close. If what he’s got is lethal enough to kill a horse, I’d hate to think what it could do to one of us.”

Marc felt cold all over. “Assuming it’s the same thing—”

“Oh, it’s the same thing, all right. Only it’s affecting humans, too. Remember, this guy’s calculated. So far, nothing’s happened by accident.” His lingering look caught Marc’s undivided attention. “Nothing.”

The sheriff’s words from moments ago taunted Marc. It looks like part of some sick master plan. But what was the plan? Without understanding it, how could they ever hope to stop it?

The ambulance pulled away. Marc watched until it veered out of sight, a sucking sensation in his chest. The sheriff said he’d be in touch, and they exchanged cell numbers. Then he strolled away, a grim look plastered on his face.

Marc glanced around in a daze. First Jared. Then Tessa. Was Vernon to be the next victim? He felt so powerless and wished he knew what to do. Until they knew otherwise, it appeared that another plague had struck, and they needed to put a stop to them. Once and for all.

“Hey, you don’t look so good,” Riley said.

“I guess I’m a little shell-shocked. I can’t believe something like this could happen to Vernon. I’m not sure what to do. Should I go to the hospital and check on him?”

“The sheriff promised to keep us up to speed, and I think you’d do more good here. Why don’t we grab some coffee at the restaurant and discuss our game plan?”

“Sounds good to me.” Yes, do something proactive—at least that was something he could do.

In the lobby Marc remembered the message on his suite door and asked the receptionist for the mail that had arrived for him. She disappeared into a backroom and returned with a white, letter-sized envelope, which he accepted with a thank you. He frowned at his typed name on the front, care of the Sabbath Resort and Conference Center. Oddly, the envelope bore no return address.

At the Backwoods Grille, where a few patrons were enjoying a late breakfast, they filled tall cups with a dark roast Colombian brew and decided to enjoy the beverages in Marc’s suite, where they could talk in privacy.

Along the way, Riley called Emily and shared the good news that the sheriff had welcomed their help. Then he broke the sad news about Vernon Brannon and asked her to pray. Emily related the scare over Sammy’s disappearance and assured Marc through Riley that everything was fine now. It had been a simple misunderstanding. They agreed to meet after lunch, then Riley clicked off.

On the way, Riley had another coughing fit. His cold was getting worse, but apparently Emily had agreed to get him some medicine.

When they reached the suite, Marc headed to the living room with the letter while Riley busied himself in the kitchen. “Care for some microwave popcorn?” he called, referring to the complimentary bag lying unused on the counter.
